Food and beverage makers in the Middle East & Africa (MEA) should be thinking about how to adapt quicker to the growing consumer demand for good quality nutrition that tastes great, according to NZMP, the global dairy ingredients brand of Fonterra.

NZMP will promote high quality dairy ingredients at Gulfood 2018, taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre from February 18-22, developed to enable Middle Eastern and African food and beverage manufacturers launch new product innovations to unlock value, and answer changing consumer preferences across these varied markets.

The team will showcase affordable nutrition ingredients, including NZMP Fat Filled Milk Powder and NZMP Buttery Blend. This is in addition to advanced ingredients, including a new ready to mix protein powder range, developed to suit the different needs of the region’s sports and active lifestyle nutrition consumers.

Simon Penfold, General Manager – Middle East & Africa, says consumers are taking greater ownership of educating themselves about food and beverage choices, and this means vastly different things in markets across the region.

“There remains a clear need for basic dairy ingredients to fulfil the day-to-day nutritional needs for most consumers across MEA. However, food and beverage manufacturers need to prepare for change. We can see demand for sports nutrition, infant nutrition and high protein beverage solutions is increasing, and we expect interest in these solutions to continue to grow.

“A rising number of consumers in the Middle East are looking for more nutrition from their food, and dairy ingredients play an increasingly important role in this. For example, in a study of Saudi Arabian consumers using instant milk powders, nutritional content was rated as one of the most important attributes when selecting products to buy,” says Mr Penfold.

NZMP Fortified+ Instant Whole Milk Powder is one of the ingredients launched to answer consumer demands for more nutritional food. This ingredient is fortified with Iron, Zinc and Vitamin C to support normal cognition and immune system function.

In addition to fortified ingredients, NZMP will also showcase a series of high protein ingredients suited to the region at Gulfood, such as NZMP Milk Protein Concentrates for great tasting processed cheese. Delegates will also be able to try Greek-style Yogurts, using NZMP Milk Protein Concentrates and NZMP Whey Protein Concentrates.

Launches of new products with high and added protein more than doubled between 2012 and 2017 in the Middle East & Africa, according to the Mintel Global New Product Database. Mr Penfold anticipates this trend will continue and shape food and beverage development in the MEA region.

“After more than 40 years’ operating in this market we feel we understand the region and the diverse needs of its consumers. We are continually investing and adapting our ingredient solutions to suit our customers’ needs in Middle East & Africa.

“In the coming year, we will be particularly focused on growing our affordable and active lifestyle nutrition offering, as well as SureStartTM ingredients for infant nutrition,” says Mr Penfold.

The NZMP team will be available throughout Gulfood to discuss NZMP’s solutions and food and beverage trends across the regions. The NZMP exhibit is at stand D1-2 in Hall 1.
