As the world marks International Women’s Day on 8th March, leading healthcare facility Burjeel Hospital is raising awareness of the issues faced by women around the world.

Burjeel Hospital is highlighting issues affecting women in the UAE from a health perspective, and the work that is being undertaken to solve these problems.

Women in the UAE face an unusually high incidence of fertility problems.  Despite the average number of children borne to Emirati women surpassing expat women by almost three times, 50% of women in the UAE face issues falling pregnant.

“The health concerns of women in the region are of paramount importance to us, particularly when it comes to fertility and reproductive success” said, Dr.Yasmin Sajjad, Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecologist and Reproductive Endocrinology at Burjeel Hospital.  “With just a few changes in lifestyle we can make a real difference to how many women are affected by fertility issues across the region.”

One of the reasons for the rising rate of infertility is the high incidence of diabetes, linked to obesity, with 60% of Emirati women overweight or obese.

This in turn has led to mounting numbers of other lifestyle related disorders diagnosed in hospitals in the region, with hypertension and cardiovascular disease also placing pressure on the healthcare system.

Meanwhile, whilst men can also be affected, breast cancer has long been the leading cause of death from cancer for women in the region.  It remains a taboo subject because of treatment via mastectomy, which is seen by some to be disfiguring of the female physique.  But 98% of breast cancers are curable if detected early, and may only require a lumpectomy instead of full mastectomy.

To celebrate women and ensure they take the best care of their health, Burjeel Hospital will be handing out pink cupcakes and wellwoman vouchers during International Women’s Day, and urging women across the region to reclaim power over their health and wellbeing.
