Keeping fit. A trend that is steadily catching up within the United Arab Emirates (UAE) borders and its environs as more people pledge to adopt healthier lifestyles through engaging in physical activities.

While this is extremely commendable and highly encouraged, physical fitness alone cannot achieve optimal results in as far as achieving a healthy lifestyle is concerned.

While it is also encouraging that the UAE region has resolved to take the bull by its horns in an effort to reduce cases of lifestyle conditions such as obesity and cardiovascular diseases, more emphasis on proper nutrition is also needed in order to effectively address this weighty issue.

According to the 2015 Nielsen’s Global Health & Wellness Survey, 55 percent of the UAE respondents consider themselves to be overweight.

The report by the research experts also showed that consumers were also attempting to take charge of their health with over 60 percent actively trying to lose weight.

But even with some degree of progress being made to transform the UAE into a healthier nation by the year 2021 through a world-class healthcare system, diet and responsible eating, according to nutrition and wellness experts, still remains a critical factor in achieving this goal.

This, according to Priyanka Mittal, director, KRBL, makers of India Gate Quinoa, is one of the most efficient ways of combating these dreaded lifestyle conditions and diseases.

Priyanka points out that by introducing foods that help reduce the daily carb intake, fitness goals can be achieved much faster. This, she says, is one of the most sustainable methods of eliminating risks, such as being overweight, and subsequently living a healthier lifestyle.

“Over the past few years, we have noticed renewed commitment, especially among the UAE residents to change their way of life by adopting and incorporating fitness into their daily lives. As experts and key players in the health food category in the region, we also highly encourage the adoption of a healthy diet as part of everyone’s fitness regime. This will significantly boost the transformation process to a healthy lifestyle.” said Priyanka.

Low-carb diets have been singled out as one of the most effective methods of weight loss. Foods that contain low carbs, such as quinoa, have been used to replace popular foods that are rich in carbs, such as bread.

A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health revealed that low-carb diets were more effective for weight loss and cardiovascular risk factor reduction compared to other diets.

According to Priyanka, eliminating refined grains - this includes refined flour and even foods made using such flour from one’s diet is key to maintain a healthy body.

“Quinoa, which is classified as a whole grain is an ideal replacement for your ordinary carb-packed foods. The average bread, including those branded as containing ‘whole grain’, are mostly made from refined grains, which can contribute towards unnecessary weight gain.” noted Priyanka.

Its contribution to healthy living resulted in the naming of 2013 as ‘The International Quinoa Year mainly due to its high nutrient content. With its gluten-free addition to any diet, quinoa also provides a valuable source of vegetarian protein, fibre, and essential vitamins as well as a variety of other health benefits and is 100 % Gluten Free. It is a very versatile grain and is can be substituted for Pasta, Wheat or Couscous.
