As per the findings of a local study revealed earlier this year, cardiac diseases account for over two-thirds of all deaths and is the biggest killer in the UAE. Hence, on the occasion of World Heart Day and with the aim to generate increased awareness on the cardiac health, RAK Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah is conducting a “Heart Health Camp” on Sep 29 from 9 am – 5 pm at the their premises.

The free one day camp, would have the GP doctors screen people for Height, Weight, Blood Pressure and Sugar levels, alongside providing a complimentary ECG following by consultation with the specialist Cardiologist as may be required by some patients.

Dr Mukesh Nathani, Specialist Cardiologist at the RAK Diabetes Center commented: “Often people are under the impression that ECG is done when someone experiences cardiac discomfort. However, ECG can reveal several abnormalities in the heart, such as abnormalities in the heart rhythm, enlargedheart or any damages from an earlier heart attack. ECG done in stress test can reveal any fatty deposits in the coronary arteries causing significant blockages. The results of the test can serve as a life saver for many people who can take more proactive measures to improve their cardiac health and avoid heart diseases that can affect their quality of life”.

Another news report states that many younger people are becoming victims to cardiac issues with doctors claiming to treat patients in their twenties. A rising number of these cases are related with atrial fibrillation, or an abnormal heart rhythm characterized by rapid and irregular beating of the atria, which typically occurs to people over the age of fifty.

Dr Raza Siddiqui, Executive Director of RAK Hospital, added: “When we see people less than 30 years of age falling prey to heart diseases, the issue takes a far serious tone than ever before. The need to take control of our health cannot be stressed enough, and through this campaign, we want to encourage people to come forward and take stock of their cardiac health in particular.”

RAK Hospital, a strong advocate of prevention better than cure, constantly engages with people in order to create awareness against prevalent health issues. The award-winning institution has successfully organized several campaigns, complimentary screenings and competitions to drive home the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle.
