The Center for Endocrine Surgery at Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi’s premier healthcare facility, has reached a significant milestone in endoscopic-assisted minimally invasive Thyroid and Parathyroid surgery. The Hospital has successfully completed 1,000 thyroid surgery cases, a landmark achievement for any medical facility.

The credit for this significant milestone goes to the Center of Excellence for Endocrine and Minimally Invasive Surgery. Endocrine and Cancer Surgeon, Prof. Iyad Hassan PHD, M.D., FACS, FASCRS, German-twice awarded for minimally invasive and Endocrine Surgery, headed the team that performed the video-assisted minimally invasive Thyroid procedure. The surgery was performed using the latest technology in minimally invasive surgery.

“It is such an impressive achievement to mark 1,000 video-assisted, minimally invasive thyroid surgical cases. I am so proud of our endocrine surgery team at Burjeel Hospital. We are establishing ourselves as the foremost center of excellence in endocrine surgery in the UAE and in the Gulf region,” said John Sunil CEO of Burjeel hospital Abu Dhabi, adding, “Our progress and growth over the past few years has been possible thanks to the expertise, passion and commitment of our endocrine surgeon, Prof. Iyad Hassan and our amazing surgical team.”

All endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques that are performed at Burjeel hospital are done by highly skilled and specialized surgeons. Endoscopic surgery is used for a wide range of treatments and conditions in specialties such as: endocrine, colorectal, general surgery, obstetrics/gynaecology, thoracic, urology, and urogynaecology and pelvic reconstruction. The endocrine team takes a highly collaborative approach to patient care, working with an anaesthesiologist, endocrinologist, oncologist, ENT, nurses, and the entire team to coordinate the best possible process to ensure the most successful outcome.

“The number of Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal surgery cases has been steadily increasing since the Endocrine Surgery Program began in 2015,” says Dr Shamsheer, Managing Director of VPS group, “Reaching the 1,000th Thyroid surgery case is a tremendous accomplishment that demonstrates the team’s determination to deliver superior care and a level of expertise not available through all surgical programs in UAE.”

Endoscopic-assisted minimally invasive surgery enables surgeons to perform the most complex and delicate procedures with precision through very small incisions. Patients benefit from a faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, less blood loss, less risk of infection, smaller incisions with less scarring, and a quicker return to daily activities.
