Dubai Judicial Institute (DJI) concluded round one of its seventh annual football tournament ‘Tolerance Tournament’ 2019, which witnessed the participation of 20 teams from governmental entities. The tournament at DJI’s football field kicked-off on 4 February and will continue till 12 March. Round two between the qualified teams begins on Tuesday, 19 February, and will be divided into two groups:

·         Group 1: Dubai Courts, General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA), Dubai Police, Public Prosecution Dubai, and Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services

·         Group 2: Dubai Municipality, Dubai Civil Defence (last year’s champions), Dubai Taxi Corporation, Dubai Customs, and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)

The matches held thus far showcased the professionalism by the competing teams which was reflected in the 175 goals scored by 83 players in 27 matches with an average of 6.48 goals per game. This was an important factor that increased the excitement and enthusiasm among the players and the public who registered a significant presence in all matches.

Due to the intensity of the competition, the referees did not hesitate to issue penalty cards to maintain fair play and emphasise sportsmanship. The first round witnessed the issuance of 30 yellow cards and two red ones to deter the offending players.

HE Justice Dr Jamal Al Sumaiti, Director General of DJI, commented: “Through watching all the first round’s matches, several observations can be made that highlight high professionalism and strong competition. This year's edition of the tournament remains distinct from the previous rounds, with players showing a tolerant attitude that helped spread a friendly, pleasant, fun, and positive atmosphere in line with this edition’s theme ‘Tolerance Tournament.’ We would like to thank all participating players and entities for their roles in the success of the tournament as well as their contributions to the dissemination of noble values and morals.”

The person who scored the most goals in the first round was Waleed Ahmed from Dubai Police with nine goals, followed by Mohammed Abdullah from Dubai courts with eight goals, Mahmoud Salama from Dubai Taxi Corporation with seven goals, Faisal Abdullah from Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services with five goals, and Adnan Mohammed Al Ali from Dubai Courts with four goals.

Dubai Police took the lead with the total number of goals scored, amounting to 21 goals in round one’s three matches, surpassing Dubai Taxi Corporation by three goals. Dubai Courts, DEWA, and Dubai Municipality ranked third, fourth, and fifth with 17, 16, and 15 goals respectively.

DJI’s annual football tournament chose ‘Tolerance Tournament’ as the theme for its seventh edition, in commemoration of the Year of Tolerance.
