Tunisian sportswomen are gearing for the fifth edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST) 2020, determined to make their mark in basketball and volleyball. The largest women’s sporting event in the Arab world, AWST 2020 will be organised by the Sharjah Women’s Sports (SWS), February 2 – 12 in Sharjah.

The Tunisian players are said to be in rigorous training and pulling out all stops to ensure that they maintain a lead in the basketball competitions. The team will be facing the UAE, KSA, Jordan, Kuwait, Algeria, Bahrain and Egypt, in the AWST 2020 basketball contests.

AWST’s volleyball competitions will see the Tunisian players lock horns with their counterparts from the UAE, KSA, Jordan, Kuwait, Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt and Syria.

HE Nada Askar Al Naqbi, Deputy Head of AWST’s Supreme Organising Committee and Head of its Executive Committee, and Director General of SWS said: “We are pleased to host women athletes from the fraternal Maghreb region, and from Tunisia in particular, at the fifth edition of AWST. The tournament offers them a platform to compete for the most prestigious titles at a leading regional tournament that convenes the highest quality sportswomen from across the Arab world.”

She added: “The confident Tunisian players represented their country and their clubs well at the last edition of AWST. They displayed high technical skills and physical fitness levels. We wish them success in this edition. We expect the competitions this year to reflect the progress in Arab women’s sports, particularly in team sports, which will stand them in good stead to compete at the global level.”

The fifth edition of AWST 2020 will see the participation of 16 Arab countries competing across nine sporting disciplines: shooting, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, show jumping, fencing, archery and karate.

The Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST) was launched in 2012, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA) and Chairperson of SWS.
