The Ministry of Economy continues to visit retail store chains across the different emirates as part of its inspection program for the holy month of Ramadan. It conducted its latest inspection today (Tuesday, June 21, 2016) at a branch of the Sharjah Cooperative Society in the Emirate of Sharjah’s Helwan area.

 

Dr. Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the Ministry's Consumer Protection Department, led the visit accompanied by Tariq Al Suwaidi, Director of the Ministry’s Office in Sharjah; Sultan Al Shamsi, Head of the Consumer Protection Department at the Department of Economic Development - Sharjah; Hassan Al Sooki, Director of Procurement Management at Sharjah Cooperative Society; and Abdullah Saleh, Branch Manager at Sharjah Cooperative Society. A number of officials of the Society and representatives from local media were present as well.

The Sharjah Cooperative Society’s administration announced during the Ministry’s visit that it has allocated four campaigns for the holy month of Ramadan covering all its 26 branches spread across the emirate. It noted that a total of 300 products are covered with discounts of as much as 70 per cent, adding that the dedicated support value campaigns to reduce prices will reach up to AED 20 million.

The administration further confirmed that these offers have increased consumer demand, with the average number of shoppers especially during the first days of the month of Ramadan reaching about 8,000 per day with total sales of AED 2 million compared to 4,500 shoppers during regular days.

Dr. Al Nuaimi went to the various sections of the branch and instructed that information on the Ministry’s consumer awareness initiative be displayed on the cooperative’s screens, which the association agreed to do.

At the end of the tour, Dr. Al Nuaimi confirmed that prices in Sharjah are stable and that the offers are comprehensive and meet consumer needs. He further pointed out that reports of price increases have lessened this year, stating that a total of 1,600 complaints have been received by the Ministry’s call center from the beginning of June to date.
