Russian Spies Accused of Involvement in a Series of Global Cyber-Plots

Close access operations, like the ones exposed today, are reminders of the considerable resources available to nation states. We identified APT28 using these operations previously, when they penetrated the network of a European hotel.

The targeting of Westinghouse is a reminder that APT28 is still, primarily, engaged in classic intelligence operations. As long as American nuclear technology has existed, Russia has used its spies to steal it.

When APT28 took on the moniker “Fancy Bears Hack Team” they were mocking the security professionals who were trying, somewhat in vain, to warn the world that the Russians were behind this attempt to delegitimize the Games. This indictment is cathartic for those of us who worked that mission.
