Positive outlook, persistent pursuit of happiness and personal growth are standard moral imperatives for everyday living.  These factors play a substantial role when it comes to self-development and improvement. But, what is self-development? How does one initiate their self-improvement journey and what does it take to reach one’s self-development goals?

Self or personal development is when a person focuses on areas of self-improvement. It almost always starts with self-awareness and the ability to transform your habits.

To initiate your journey on the path to self-improvement, the first step is to identify, realize and want to strive to be the best version of yourself.

For someone like me whose schedule runs from the early hours of the day till late, I track my self-development with improvement areas I refer to as ‘pillars’. I have five, but not limited to, namely physical, intellectual, social, financial and spiritual. Once you make the commitment towards development, the next step is to look around you and consider which of your pillars showcases your best. The ones you list as lowest are the ones you focus on developing first.

Prioritizing goals also goes a long way when it comes to self-development. It is also necessary to set goals and understand what you want to achieve and how to achieve it. For example, if you want to pursue your Master’s degree by 2018, work towards it now before it’s too late to apply.

‘Just Read It’ is a day to day guide on self-development that touches on key areas of development including:

Finding a strong support system

During your journey, it is best advised to find a strong support system. A personal mentor who can help guide and support you as you work towards your goal. This will help you with focusing skills should you get off track.

Be inspired - Just read it

Books are concentrated sources of wisdom. The more books you read, the more wisdom you expose yourself. Reading biographies personally inspired me as I worked on myself and my own self goals. The life experiences and lessons published in these books can potentially become a source for motivation and understanding during your journey.

Goodbye comfort zone

Stepping out of one’s comfort zone can not only help boost confidence, but also identify opportunities for self- improvement. Develop strong communication skills through constant interaction with new people and improve one’s confidence by volunteering to speak at various events hosted by schools, universities and organizations.

Observe

A lot about self-development is attributed to your surroundings and the people you surround yourself with. Observing your environment, friends and family will allow you to understand your true strengths and weaknesses. Remember all of us have fears. Fear of uncertainty, fear of public speaking, fear of risk… All our fears keep us in the same position and prevent us from growing. Recognize that your fears reflect areas where you can grow and address this.

Welcome change

The entire process of self-development is nothing but change. Consistent and constant change. Exuding a stubborn approach towards development can hamper your growth and push you further away from your goals.

As individuals, we continue to grow and evolve within our community making it imperative to focus on lifelong learning. The more we better ourselves, the better we will make our world to live in for us and our future generations.
